The diesel particulate filter (DPF) is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — components in any modern diesel vehicle. Its job is to capture soot particles from the exhaust before they escape into the atmosphere. Under normal driving conditions, the DPF periodically burns off these deposits in a process called regeneration. But when this process can't complete properly, the filter blocks up, and the problems start.
The most obvious sign is the DPF warning light on your dashboard. This orange symbol — usually depicting an engine with a dotted filter outline — indicates that the filter has reached a level of saturation that requires attention. At this stage, you may still be able to clear the blockage by driving at sustained higher speeds on a motorway for 20–30 minutes to trigger a regeneration cycle. If the light stays on, however, you need professional intervention.
A second clear indicator is reduced engine performance. When the DPF becomes heavily blocked, the engine management system restricts engine output to protect the filter and the engine itself. This is known as limp mode, and you'll notice it as a significant reduction in power, a reluctance to rev beyond a certain point, and a general feeling of sluggishness that wasn't there before.
Increased fuel consumption is the third symptom. A partially blocked DPF restricts exhaust flow, which places additional strain on the engine and forces it to work harder. If you're filling up noticeably more often without a change in your driving habits, your DPF could be the culprit. Similarly, a fourth sign is a pungent or unusual smell from the exhaust — particularly a strong acrid smell when the engine is warm — which can indicate incomplete combustion caused by a failing filter.
The fifth and often overlooked sign is increased engine noise or roughness. As the DPF restriction worsens, the backpressure in the exhaust system increases, which can make the engine sound and feel different. If you're noticing any combination of these symptoms — particularly the warning light alongside reduced power — contact 1st Call Autocare promptly. A professional clean carried out at the right stage costs a fraction of what a replacement DPF would.
