When a DPF fault appears and doesn't resolve through driving, vehicle owners face a choice: clean the existing filter, or replace it entirely. The answer isn't always obvious, and making the wrong choice can mean either wasting money on an unnecessary replacement or paying for a clean on a filter that's past saving. Here's how to think through it properly.
DPF cleaning is the right choice in the vast majority of cases. A professional clean — as opposed to a DIY chemical treatment — uses specialised equipment to flush, soak, and pressure-wash the filter, removing both soft soot deposits and hardened ash that has accumulated over years of use. A quality clean can restore a filter's flow rate to 85–95% of original specification, which is more than sufficient for normal operation. The cost is typically £150–£350 depending on the vehicle and the method used, compared to £800–£2,500 or more for a replacement DPF.
Replacement becomes necessary when the filter is physically damaged — cracked, melted (usually from a failed regeneration that got too hot), or structurally compromised. It's also needed when the filter has reached the end of its serviceable life and can no longer be cleaned to an acceptable flow rate, which typically happens after very high mileage or after multiple incomplete regenerations have overloaded it with ash. Ash, unlike soot, cannot be burned off during regeneration and accumulates permanently until removed by cleaning.
One practical way to decide is to get a flow test or differential pressure test before committing to either option. If the filter shows acceptable flow after cleaning, cleaning is the right choice. If flow is still inadequate after cleaning, or if the filter shows physical damage, replacement is necessary. At 1st Call Autocare, we assess every DPF before and after cleaning and give you an honest report on its condition. We will never recommend replacement when a clean will do the job.
A final consideration is the quality of replacement filters. OEM replacements are expensive but reliable. Aftermarket replacements vary enormously in quality — some are excellent, others fail within 20,000 miles. If replacement is unavoidable, we'll advise you on reputable options that won't leave you facing the same problem again in a year's time.
