The moment your DPF warning light illuminates, the clock starts ticking. Not in a dramatic sense — you're not about to break down — but the window for the cheapest and easiest solution starts to close. Here's exactly what to do, in order of priority.
First, stay calm and don't stop the engine unnecessarily. The worst thing you can do immediately after a DPF light comes on is switch the engine off. If the vehicle has started an active regeneration cycle — which it does automatically when the DPF reaches a certain soot load — interrupting it by switching off the engine leaves the filter in a partially regenerated state and can worsen the blockage.
Second, if conditions allow, attempt a highway drive. For a first-time DPF warning light, the filter may be at an early stage of blockage that can still be cleared by passive regeneration. Find a motorway or dual carriageway and drive at a consistent 50–60mph for at least 20–30 minutes without stopping. Keep the engine speed above 2,000 rpm. This raises exhaust temperature sufficiently to burn off the accumulated soot. If the light goes out during or after this drive, the immediate problem is resolved — though you should consider why the blockage occurred and whether your driving pattern needs to change.
Third, if the light remains on after the highway drive, book a professional service promptly. Don't continue driving for days or weeks with the light on, especially if performance is affected. A filter at 80% blocked is significantly easier and cheaper to clean than one at 95% blocked. At the fully blocked stage, the engine may enter limp mode and the vehicle becomes very difficult to drive.
At 1st Call Autocare, a DPF clean at the early-to-mid blockage stage typically costs £150–£300 and is completed the same day. Waiting until the filter is fully blocked, or until secondary damage has occurred to the turbocharger or engine from excessive backpressure, can multiply that cost many times over.
