What Happens During a Vehicle Diagnostic Check?

When most people think of a vehicle diagnostic check, they picture someone plugging a reader into the OBD port under the dashboard, waiting for a number to appear, and looking it up on Google. That's not what a professional diagnostic service is. Done properly, a diagnostic check is a structured investigation that uses fault codes as a starting point — not an endpoint.

The process begins before the diagnostic equipment is even connected. An experienced technician carries out a visual inspection of the engine bay, looking for obvious issues: leaking coolant, oil smoke from the rocker cover, damaged wiring, cracked hoses, and any signs of previous repairs that might be relevant. Visual inspection catches things that no piece of electronics will find.

Next comes the electronic scan. Professional diagnostic equipment — as distinct from the generic Bluetooth code readers available on Amazon for £20 — communicates with all of the vehicle's control modules, not just the engine ECU. This means we can see fault codes in the transmission, ABS, airbag, body control, climate, and other systems that a basic reader would miss entirely. Many apparent engine problems are actually rooted in another system's fault.

The fault codes themselves are then interpreted in context. A code like P0401 (insufficient EGR flow) doesn't automatically mean a dirty EGR valve — it could also indicate a faulty EGR temperature sensor, a vacuum leak, or a software issue. An experienced diagnostician looks at the code, the live data, the vehicle history, and the symptoms to determine the actual cause.

Live data analysis is often where the real value lies. With the engine running, we can monitor dozens of parameters in real time — fuel trims, boost pressure, injector pulse widths, lambda values, EGR position, DPF differential pressure, and many more. Anomalies in these live values often point to faults that don't yet have stored codes but will develop into bigger problems if left unaddressed.
