The term "Stage 1" is widely used in vehicle tuning but often poorly explained. In simple terms, a Stage 1 remap is a software optimisation of the engine control unit that's designed for vehicles in standard, unmodified form — no hardware changes required, no uprated intercooler, no performance exhaust. It works within the existing hardware's capabilities and is the safest, most cost-effective way to extract more performance from your engine.
The process involves connecting to the vehicle's ECU — either through the OBD port on most modern vehicles, or via a direct connection to the ECU on older cars — reading the current calibration data, modifying the relevant parameters, and writing the new map back to the ECU. Depending on the vehicle, the process takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. At 1st Call Autocare, we always read and securely store your original map before making any changes, giving you a guaranteed route back to factory settings.
What parameters change depends on the engine type. On turbocharged engines, the most significant adjustments are typically to boost pressure targets, fuel injection timing and quantity, and torque limits — the artificial limits manufacturers impose to differentiate between power outputs in the same engine family. These torque limits are often the single most impactful thing a remap addresses: a diesel engine that produces 140bhp in one model and 170bhp in another from the same hardware is a clear indication that the lower output is software-limited.
Realistic gains for turbocharged diesel engines are typically 25–40bhp and 60–100Nm of torque. For turbocharged petrol engines, expect 15–25bhp and 30–50Nm. These are conservative figures based on real-world results — some vehicles respond significantly more. Naturally aspirated engines respond less dramatically, with typical gains of 5–10%.
Stage 1 remaps are suitable for road-legal, standard vehicles of all ages. There is no age restriction — vehicles from the early 2000s onwards with electronically controlled engines can typically be remapped. Some very old vehicles with carburettors or early fuel injection systems require different approaches.
